PRIORITISING METABOLIC FUNCTIONS:
A foundation for resilience in a COVID world

A5M VIRTUAL WORKSHOP - watch live or watch later
WEDNESDAY 10, 17, 24 MARCH, 7pm - 8.30pm AEDT

A NOTE FROM DR THOMAS GUILLIAMS, PhD

We are well past one year since COVID-19 an infectious disease and global pandemic has contributing to the deaths of over 2.16 million lives (and counting) and infected over 100million people.

It has upended nearly every aspect of our "normal" way of life, and we are facing adverse health effects due to restrictions, quarantine measures, reduced social interaction, and isolation, all impacting our physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Justifiably, most attention has been given to acute and emergency care, symptom relief, preventative public healthcare measures and fast-tracking vaccine solutions.

However, it was clear from the outset of this pandemic that the SARS-CoV-2 was much more problematic (and lethal) for individuals with specific underlying conditions.

In some communities, nearly 90% of severe COVID-19 cases and deaths were due to an underlying condition, most prominently hypertension, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic renal disease, and chronic lung disease (as well as age, though most older individuals had one or more of these underlying conditions). These conditions mostly fall under the pathophysiological categories of cardiometabolic disease.

Functional and integrative medicine clinicians who value "root cause" solutions, must prioritise therapies that reduce vulnerabilities while promoting resilience to future waves of similar infectious diseases.

Understanding the statistical and biological associations between COVID-19 and the most common underlying conditions (most of which are cardiometabolic or related immune/inflammatory conditions) and the most well-studied non-pharmacological approaches to improving cardiometabolic and immune-related functions, is the way to create resilience to similar future pandemics.

The focus of clinicians should be on the most powerful lifestyle-based therapies, the most powerful resilience against chronic disease manifestations.
