Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Chronic Disease & Brain Health
Understanding the powerhouse of the body

"….we are seeing only the tip of the iceberg of the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in our patients’ disease and ill health. As the environment becomes more polluted and drug prescribing increases, this problem will become even worse. The good news is that there is a lot we can do to help." from Mitochondria - Fundamental to Life and Health by Joseph Pizzorno, ND
Join us in Sydney on Sunday 18th August 2019, and learn how mitochondrial dysfunction affects our brain health
    8.30am - 5.30pm Pullman Sydney Hyde Park
    1-day workshop:  $550 Standard price | $500 A5M Member price

    Why should you attend?
“The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell.” from Association of Psychological Studies 2018
Mitochondrial DNA Mutations are present in one in 200 people with at least one in 5,000 suffering from severe disease. This means it is likely that most GPs will have patients with mitochondrial disorders at some time in their practice. Mitochondrial disease can be very difficult to diagnose because mitochondrial disease can affect so many organs and tissues of the body, and patients may present with a range of difficult to diagnose symptoms. Understanding the range of symptoms that patients may present with, the testing available to diagnose mitochondrial disorders, and strategies for treating these patients is essential knowledge for GPs and all healthcare practitioners.

    Learning outcomes
    1. Review the basics of mitochondrial function with a focus on the signaling and sensing role, and how this is connected to the immune system and chronic immune system activation.
    2. How does mitochondrial dysfunction contribute to our most important diseases of the brain, including neurodegenerative disorders, mood and behavioural disorders
    3. Review the evidence that the model of mitochondrial dysfunction is consistent with the new paradigm of the pathogenesis of chronic disease emerging from scientific and clinical studies.
    4. What environmental, lifestyle, metabolic and nutritional factors injure the mitochondria and how can we best assess this in our patients? How can we use these factors to help protect the brain from damage?
    5. Understand the multi-factor aspects of substance use disorder, and how nutrition can repair specific mitochondrial dysfunction, supporting patients on their journey back to health.
    6. Case study discussion to understand the historical and current factors that can contribute to the investigation options for assessing, and the treatment options, that can reverse mild cognitive decline.
    7. Discuss factors that can lead to dysfunctional mitochondrial pathways, such as environmental toxins, inflammation, hormone imbalances and oxidative stress and options for testing for these and therapeutic strategies that can be implemented based on test results.
Don’t miss your chance to attend this important workshop and learn the importance of understanding the powerhouse of the body. Mitochondrial dysfunction can impact everything from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, anxiety, depression and other chronic diseases and disorders. This workshop will examine the foundational role mitochondria play within the cell and the consequences of dysfunction; exploring the role of genetic factors, exercise, diet, medications and drugs, environmental toxins on mitochondrial function and its relationship to chronic disease.
Mitochondrial health is demanding our attention. As the powerhouse of the body, the mitochondria play an important role in cell health; responsible for regulating key metabolites and the biochemical process of cell respiration, converting nutrients into energy. The workshop will distinguish the foundational role mitochondria play within the cell and explore the consequence of dysfunction; examine the role of genetic factors, exercise, diet, medications and drugs, environmental toxins on mitochondrial function and its relationship to chronic disease; explore the effect on brain disease, and other chronic diseases and disorders.
    Workshop Educators
